Origins

Before 1789

The Calvet family’s origins can be traced back to the Languedoc, more specifically to the village of Pouzols in the Minervois wine region. It was a family of wine merchants and traders that owned several plots of grapevines.

Its expansion continued in the 1850s with Octave, Jean-Marie’s son, who showed a growing interest in Bordeaux wines. He worked tirelessly to build up a network of wine merchants in the Bordeaux region.

Jean-Marie Calvet founded Maison Calvet in Tain-L’Hermitage in the Rhône Valley.

Octave set up the firm’s head office in Bordeaux and embarked on the construction of what would become the very symbol of Calvet, a prestigious building on the Cours du Médoc, in the heart of the Chartrons neighbourhood, as a sign of the firm’s prosperity.

Maison Calvet took on a new dimension with the opening of a subsidiary in Beaune. Octave’s son Jean was a true entrepreneur who helped the company to expand and develop abroad.

For the Helfrich family, the adventure began in 1979 in Alsace, when Joseph Helfrich launched his business as a producer of wines and sparking wines.
